Why Puerto Rico Needs to Be On Your Bucket List
I visited Puerto Rico on a yoga retreat, and I didn’t do much planning or researching ahead of time. One of my favorite yoga teachers planned this one week trip for us (more on that in later blog posts!) and this destination alone is a spectacularly beautiful reason to add Puerto Rico to your bucket list.
La Cueva Del Indio in Arecibo, Puerto Rico
The cave gets its name from the various pre-Columbian indigenous petroglyphs that are found in the walls of the cave. The petroglyphs made by the original inhabitants of PR, the Tainos. Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands to its east, and eastern Hispaniola to its west, are located on an active plate boundary zone between the North American plate and the northeast corner of the Caribbean plate. This explains why Arecibo, and other parts of Puerto Rico, have amazing geological formations such as cliffs and arches as pictured here.
How To Visit The Caves
La Cueva del Indio is in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. There is ample parking space and there is no paid admission. However, I do highly recommend visiting the caves and limestone structure with a tour guide because they will give you the history of the area and advise you where to step and where to see the most beautiful views. The cave itself is optional, and you should be very careful to step up and inside the cave. It’s well worth the adventure and seeing the petroglyphs, but it is at your own risk.
Even if you don’t go inside the caves though, you will see the most beautiful views of the geological limestone formations in the ocean with the clear aquamarine ocean water crashing against the arches.
Be sure to wear comfortable hiking shoes, either sneakers or sandals like Tevas, and clothing that is protective from the direct sun. Bring your sunscreen, plenty of water, snacks, and your camera of course!
This Is Just One of the Many Reasons to Visit Puerto Rico
Many of us might assume that Puerto Rico is just a small island with beautiful beaches, but it is a geological marvel! The mountains, the limestone arches, the rivers, the caves, are all over the island. I think one of the best parts is that Puerto Rico is only a 3 hour flight from Miami, FL, USA. US citizens do not need a passport to visit which makes it that much easier! In another post, I’ll talk more about my yoga retreat at the Casa Grande Mountain Retreat in Utuado, Puerto Rico. Utuado is a mountainous region resembling the lush greenery of the forests in Costa Rica. Stay tuned for more posts on the beauty of Puerto Rico!
